Free outdoor fitness sessions for people aged 50

The City of Salisbury and Adelaide University (AU) have partnered to deliver free outdoor fitness sessions for people aged 50.

Trained volunteers are facilitating weekly sessions at four local outdoor gyms, helping participants safely and confidently use outdoor fitness equipment while building a fun, welcoming, and social environment.

The program will be evaluated to measure its impact on physical activity and social wellbeing, with funding provided by South Australia’s Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing Active State Collaboration program.

Lead researcher Dr Alyson Crozier says the program will address both the need for greater physical activity and stronger social ties. “Physical inactivity is a major issue in Australia, with only one in three older people meeting recommended exercise guidelines.”

“For many there are real barriers to traditional exercise, whether it’s cost, confidence or simply not knowing where to start. That’s where this program can make a difference, while also building a sense of belonging, which is just as important as the physical activity”.
